Biochar (pyrogenic organic matter) has emerged as an innovative way to improve soil fertility, increase soil carbon sequestration and reduce emission of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide from agricultural soils. Bernard Fungo studies the mechanisms through which biochar affects emission of greenhouse gases. He also investigates whether biochar can contribute practical benefits for farmers on low-fertility tropical agricultural soils.
