Prio Sambhodo discusses the character and practice of citizenship in rural Indonesia. On the basis of 12 months of ethnographic study of everyday interactions in ‘Sariendah’, a village in West Java, he traces the norms, practices and discursive strategies that shape the way rural Indonesians deal with state institutions. The study revisits the same village that Hans Antlöv examined thirty year earlier for a study on village politics during the New Order – Indonesia’s period of authoritarian rule that ended in 1998.
