When people are in emotional distress they have a tendency to tell others about their experienced, a phenomenon known as social sharing. The widespread conviction that this helps is not actually supported by scientific research. Lisanne Pauw investigates why sharing emotions with others often fails to be an effective means of emotion regulation, and ways in which sharing emotions can have a positive effect for the sharer.
