On Thursday 1 April 2010, the Dutch Cabinet appointed Professor Louise Gunning president of the Health Council of the Netherlands. The appointment will be effective from 1 September 2010. Gunning is now president of the Board of Directors of the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) and dean of the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine.

On Thursday 1 April 2010, the Dutch Cabinet appointed Professor Louise Gunning president of the Health Council of the Netherlands. The appointment will be effective from 1 September 2010. Gunning is now president of the Board of Directors of the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) and dean of the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine. The Health Council is an independent academic advisory body that advises the Dutch government and parliament on health and healthcare-related issues and research.

According to Karel van der Toorn, president of the Board, Louise Gunning was appointed chairperson of the Health Council in recognition of her extensive contributions to both the AMC and the UvA: ‘Her dedication and commitment have enhanced the stature and public image of the AMC at both national and international level.’ The Health Council is very pleased with Gunning’s appointment, stating that her accomplishments in the area of public health and her vast management experience will be a great asset to the council.

About Louise Gunning

Gunning (1951) studied at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the John Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore (USA), and obtained her PhD from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. She held research posts at the Catholic University of Louvain and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. Gunning also worked as a policy staff member at the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. She was appointed professor of Social Health Care at the UvA in 1991 and was a member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy from 1995 to 1997. From 1997 she served on the Board of Directors of the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) and also held the position of vice-dean. In 2001 she was appointed president of the Board of the AMC-UvA and dean of the UvA’s Faculty of Medicine. Gunning is a member of the Health Council and has served on several of its committees.

Successor

The Supervisory Board of the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA) and the Executive Board of the UvA have nominated Prof. Marcel Levi to succeed Gunning as president of the AMC-UvA and dean of the UvA Faculty of Medicine from 1 September 2010. Levi (1964) has been professor of General Internal Medicine at the UvA since 2000 and has also been head of the Department of Internal Medicine of the AMC since 2001. He has been chairman of the AMC Division of Internal Specialisms since 2003.
