José van Dijck, professor of Media and Culture and dean of the Faculty of Humanities (FGw) at the University of Amsterdam, has been appointed a member of the prestigious Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Van Dijck's appointment is all the more exceptional because she specialises in a relatively young academic field.

Members of the KNAW are nominated by the academic community and selected annually on the basis of their academic achievements. They are prominent scholars working in all areas of academic research.

The KNAW has selected 27 new members this year. The inauguration of the new Academy members will take place on Monday, 13 September.
