The UvA orchestra, J. Pzn Sweelinck and Stichting Leukemie (The Leukaemia Foundation) raised €26,232.29 during a benefit day on Thursday, 17 June. This amount will go toward leukemia research by Dr Arnon Kater and Professor Rien van Oers at the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA).

The eighty students of the Sweelinck orchestra performed music by Sibelius and Debussy, as well as Sophia by the Flemish composer Dirk Brosse. In this piece the story of a girl with leukemia was depicted through film and music. Before the concert there was a lecture and in the afternoon there was a children's concert.

At the end of the evening Gijs Beukhof (president of Stichting Leukemie) and Jérôme Jurrius (president of the Sweelinck orchestra) announced the amount raised and they presented the cheque to researcher Arnon Kater. By this point almost 24,000 euros had been raised. Thereafter, this amount increased further to more than 26,000 euros. The revenue came from ticket sales and contributions from sponsors (€16,297.25). In addition, visitors could make a donation or complete a standing order form. This amounted to €4,967.52, which was doubled by the UvA Executive Board.
