The Supervisory Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA) have reappointed Dr. Karel van der Toorn as president of the UvA and HvA Executive Board as of 1 September 2010. Paul Doop has also been reappointed as member and vice-president of the Executive Board. Both reappointments are for a four-year period.
The Supervisory Boards appreciated the manner in which Van der Toorn and Doop have developed their leadership roles at both the UvA and HvA. Professor Niek Urbanus, chairman of the Supervisory Board: ‘The executive agenda for the coming period will, given the dynamism and ambition of both institutions, test Van der Toorn and Doop's creativity, expertise, communication skills and perseverance, while society and politicians will rightly expect much of both organisations and their cooperation. It is now important to make progress with respect to the human dimension.' The Supervisory Board are pleased that Van der Toorn and Doop have agreed to a new term of office and will assist the Executive Board where desired and necessary.
About Karel van der ToornKarel van der Toorn (1956) came to the UvA in 1998 as professor of Religions of Antiquity. Between 1998 and 2003 he was also dean of the UvA's Faculty of Humanities. Van der Toorn was appointed president of the Executive Board of the UvA and HvA in September 2006.
About Paul DoopPaul Doop was a partner at Deloitte from 1999 to 2005. Before this he was, inter alia, director/director of ICS Adviseurs (ICS Consultants), director of employment agency Start and he held management positions in finance and real estate at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Doop has been vice-president and member of the UvA and HvA Executive Board since October 2006.
