Six companies have committed themselves to making a financial contribution to the Amsterdam University College Scholarship Fund (ASF) for three years. This was announced by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Eberhard van der Laan, during the ASF Fundraising Dinner on Tuesday, 17 May. The ASF awards scholarships to talented students who require financial support to study at Amsterdam University College (AUC). The ASF is sponsored by Shell, Rabobank, Schiphol Group, KLM, Akzo Nobel and PwC. In addition, the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam, AUC's parent institutions, also contribute to the Scholarship Fund.
Since the launch of AUC three years ago, the number of scholarship students has grown to 75 and a total of over 800,000 euro in scholarships has been awarded. The amount of funds available is expected to double in the coming period.
Mayor Van der Laan emphasised, also in his capacity as Chairman of the Economic Development Board Amsterdam (EDBA), that cooperation between the public and private sectors is essential for the economic and social development of Amsterdam and the surrounding region. One of the objectives of the EDBA is to attract international talent to the city.
The AUC motto – Excellence and Diversity in a Global City – is in keeping with these objectives. The students at AUC are selected on the basis of their academic qualities and motivation. Approximately half of the students come from abroad. They are taught by top international lecturers, with 40% of the AUC lecturers having received a doctorate from one of the top 100 universities in the Shanghai ranking.
Amsterdam University College (AUC) was established in 2009 as a joint excellence initiative of the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam. AUC’s motto is Excellence and Diversity in a Global City. It offers an international liberal arts and sciences Bachelor programme that crosses the boundaries of languages, cultures and academic disciplines. As a selective and residential honours college, it attracts students from all over the world. They engage on a daily basis in intensive and small-scale seminars with high calibre international staff. Discussions start from ‘Big Questions in Science and Society’ and lead to in-depth study in a wide range of disciplines. Students live together on an international campus.
