Karel van der Toorn, president of the Executive Board (CvB) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has decided after consultation with the Supervisory Board to resign from his position effective immediately.

Karel van der Toorn, president of the Executive Board (CvB) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has decided after consultation with the Supervisory Board to resign from his position effective immediately. The reason for this decision is a disagreement between the Supervisory Board and the president of the Executive Board on the direction and tempo of strategic changes within the UvA.

The Supervisory Board is very appreciative of Karel van der Toorn for services provided to the UvA and HvA. Under his leadership, both organisations have grown stronger and they are currently in good shape. The quality of teaching and research has been the highest priority under the leadership of Van der Toorn.

At the request of the Supervisory Board, Paul Doop, vice-president of the CvB, will take on the role of acting president of the CvB of the UvA and HvA effective immediately. The Supervisory Board will shortly begin the recruitment process for a new president of the CvB.
