The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is ranked 40th in the Top 50 Social Sciences universities as assessed by Times Higher Education (THE). The UvA is the only continental European university on the global list. The top 50 is completely dominated by universities from English-speaking countries (USA, UK, Australia and Canada). Only five universities from non-English speaking countries are ranked. In addition to the Netherlands, China, Singapore and Hong Kong are also represented . The top three positions are occupied by Stanford, Harvard and Oxford respectively.

A broad range of disciplines, including economics, communication sciences, education, geography and law, are assessed in the THE Social Sciences rankings. Five criteria are assessed: teaching, citations, research, international outlook and industry income. These are the same criteria that are considered in the overall THE World Universities rankings. The UvA is ranked 92nd in the overall category. Last month, it was announced that the UvA was placed 30th in the THE Arts and Humanities rankings.
