Award presentation

Sociologist Gerben Moerman has been named UvA Lecturer of the Year 2011 for his dynamic and innovative teaching. The award was presented by jury chairwoman Tessa van Ligten, a Dentistry student and member of the Central Student Council.

Moerman has a unique style of teaching that makes an impact on students and involves them in the material presented in the lecture. He links theory to practice and society and continuously surprises his students with inspiring stories.

Van Ligten stated that the student jury holds this award in high regard because high quality education, knowledge transfer and educating individuals to be both committed and critical in relation to society is impossible without good lecturers. This award focuses on good teaching and provides students with an opportunity to express their opinion in this matter.

An award from students, for lecturers

The Rector Magnificus, Dymph van den Boom, emphasised that the award is from students, for lecturers. Many students, study associations and a jury made up solely of students were involved in the process leading up to this award. This award stimulated discussion among students and lecturers on the nature of good teaching and education.
