On the occasion of the 16th edition of the Grachtenfestival, Friday the 23th of August, the four conservatorium students who make up the Antonín string quartet treated the audience gathered at the Roeterseiland Campus construction site to a performance set against the beautiful backdrop of Amsterdam.
The concert was held in the open glass space of the new building that straddles Nieuwe Achtergracht. Though construction work is still in full swing, the building materials were cleared away and the unique space temporarily made available especially for the Grachtenfestival. The quartet’s programme had a Russian theme featuring works by Borodin and Shostakovich. Illuminated by the early evening sun, the construction site offered surprisingly good acoustics for the music. This year’s Grachtenfestival included performances at many special locations in Amsterdam. The concert at the Roeterseiland Campus was made possible by BAM, the Grachtenfestival and the University of Amsterdam.
In the years ahead, the University of Amsterdam will be investing heavily in the redevelopment of Roeterseiland. A number of buildings are being renovated and the outside spaces are also being relandscaped. The site will accommodate students and staff from three faculties: Economics and Business, Social & Behavioural Sciences and Law.
