The University of Amsterdam will not take part in an experiment with PhD students. The Executive Board has notified the PhD council UvAPro that it will not submit an application to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
‘We thank the minister for looking into the possibilities and have followed the proposal for the experiment with interest’, says Rector Magnificus Dymph van den Boom. ‘The training of PhDs is one of the university’s most important and unique tasks. To align to the European standard is a good thing for the internationalisation of higher education in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, in the current conjuncture at the UvA, in which the university is working on a new P&O policy paper with a focus on the career development of young researchers, the UvA chooses not to register for the experiment.
The UvA will follow future developments closely.
