The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is placed 58th in the 2018 QS World University Rankings. In the latest rankings, released on Thursday, 8 June, the UvA drops one place from last year – in 2016/2017 the UvA was ranked at 57th.

QS World University Ranking

This is the first time the UvA is not the highest ranked Dutch university in the QS Rankings, which was released separately from Times Higher Education (THE) for the first time in 2010. This year the top spot goes to TU Delft.

The UvA and TU Delft are the only Dutch universities listed in the top 100.  Just like previous years, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA) leads the rankings at number 1.

The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), student to faculty ration (20%), international faculty (5%) and international students (5%).

Rankings by subject

Each spring the QS World University Rankings by Subject is released. In the latest edition, which was released in March, the UvA surged to second spot among universities worldwide in Communication & Media Studies (up from 6th place the year before). The UvA has a total of 19 subject areas listed in the top 50.
