As of now, it is possible for associate professors at the UvA to act as a PhD supervisor. This comes after the ‘ius promovendi’, the right to supervise PhD candidates, was extended to associate professors. Previously, this right was reserved solely for professors.
The UvA has chosen to extend the ‘ius promovendi’ right to associate professors. It is now the faculties’ prerogative on how to apply this right. It is possible, under exceptional circumstances, to extend the right to assistant professors, but such a request must have compelling reasons. The approval of such a request will be at the sole discretion of the Doctorate Board.
The extension of ius promovendi results in a number of changes to the doctorate regulations. These changes have been placed as an addendum to the Dutch version (English to follow soon).
