The Executive Board has appointed five new Confidential Advisers for Academic Integrity. Each of the UvA campuses now has its own Confidential Adviser. Emeritus professor Hanneke de Haes, who served as the Confidential Adviser for the entire UvA until recently, will continue her work as the Confidential Adviser at the AMC Campus.

The Confidential Advisor for Academic Integrity is a point of contact for questions and complaints about the academic integrity of students and staff.

There was previously just one Confidential Adviser at the UvA, but the decision has now been made to appoint different Confidential Advisers for each campus: Prof. Frans Grijzenhout (City Centre Campus, Faculty of Humanities), Prof. J.A.E.F. van Dongen (Science Park, Faculty of Science), Prof. A.M.B. de Groot (Roeterseiland, Faculty of Social Sciences) Prof. A.M.B. de Groot (AMC, Faculty of Medicine) and Prof. C. van Loveren (ACTA, Faculty of Dentistry). This offers a number of benefits: it provides solid expertise in research practice, academics can choose from various Confidential Advisers and the physical proximity lowers the threshold for making contact. 

Tasks of Confidential Advisers

In addition to being a point of contact for questions and complaints about academic integrity, the Confidential Adviser for Academic Integrity will also mediate complaints or refer them to the relevant supervisor in the event of an interpersonal conflict. The Confidential Adviser additionally informs complainants and potential complainants regarding the procedure for submitting a complaint to the Academic Integrity Committee.

Academic integrity at the UvA

The University of Amsterdam endorses the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice (Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) 2004, version 2014, currently under revision). An Academic Integrity Working Group led by Prof. Frans Oort has recently presented an advisory report to the Executive Board and the deans, which discusses issues relating to academic integrity within the various aspects of scientific practice. The report helps faculties to ensure that their policies on these different aspects promote an ethical pursuit of scholarship.
