As of 1 August 2020, smoking will no longer be allowed on UvA premises. From that day, Dutch educational institutions, from primary schools to universities, will be obligated to keep their premises smoke-free.

The UvA aims to provide staff and students with a healthy and smoke-free learning and working environment. The new policy will support people trying to quit smoking, protect non-smokers from inhaling cigarette smoke and prevent more young people from taking up smoking.

The smoking ban applies to everyone who is using the buildings and grounds: staff, students, visitors, contractors and suppliers. At the Amsterdam Science Park, the University Quarter and the Roeterseiland Campus all ashtrays and ashtray tiles will be removed and signs will be placed reading ‘This area is smoke-free’. If you do smoke a cigarette outside of the UvA campuses, please respect our neighboring residents and businesses (and do not cause any nuisance).
