Prof. Marieke de Goede has been appointed by the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam as university professor of Politics of Security Cultures, effective 1 May. In this new role, De Goede will research securitisation and the role of technology and infrastructures therein, and bring together various academic domains around themes such as resilience, security, conflict and peace. De Goede is currently dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

From digital surveillance to sanctions and financial flows: increasingly, societal issues are being approached as security matters. This securitisation has major consequences for policy, democratic control and the way states and institutions intervene in society. De Goede investigates how these processes emerge and the role of technology and infrastructures play in them. She focuses, among other things, on data-driven warfare, the relationship between security and international political economy, the role of financial flows in security policy, and the historical intertwining of finance, security and the state.

De Goede's research project into the enduring impact of colonial histories on contemporary financial infrastructures, for which she received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council in 2025, aligns seamlessly with her new chair.

Resilience and security

An important task for De Goede as a university professor will be connecting disciplines and networks, and developing integrated perspectives on resilience, security, conflict and peace, both within the university and beyond. ‘With her extensive scientific and administrative experience at both the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Social Sciences & Behavioural Sciences, and with her broad network extending beyond the boundaries of the UvA, Marieke has everything it takes to bring together various domains in research and education,’ says rector magnificus Peter-Paul Verbeek. ‘Resilience and security are central, from political science to international, historical, and decolonial perspectives – areas in which she has proven herself as an outstanding scholar. I am therefore very pleased that Marieke will now continue her work at the UvA as a university professor.’

About the university professors
University professors are specially appointed by the Executive Board, usually for a period of five years. They are expected to give impetus to scientific developments that transcend traditional disciplines and thus make an important contribution to the profiling of the university. In addition to Marieke de Goede, the UvA has six other university professors: Robbert Dijkgraaf, Natali Helberger, André Nollkaemper, Rick van der Ploeg, Maarten de Rijke and Claes de Vreese.
