The University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Executive Board has appointed Dr A.H.G. Rinnooy Kan University Professor of Economics and Business Studies, specifically focusing on change processes at the micro and macro level. The appointment is effective from 1 September 2012.
In a turbulent world economy, change is the only constant. This applies to nations and businesses, citizens and leaders, and employers and employees. Economics and business studies traditionally provide the analytical foundation for change processes. Subsequently, complex negotiations, often involving multiple parties at various levels, must then define the nature of the change involved. There are excellent opportunities for education and research in both phases.
Alexander Rinnooy Kan (1949) studied mathematics in Leiden and econometrics in Amsterdam. He has held academic positions at a number of universities including Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam. At Erasmus University Rotterdam, he was appointed professor of Operational Research in 1980, before becoming director of the Econometrics Institute in 1983, and Rector Magnificus in 1986. Additionally, he was a visiting professor at University of California, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. In 2007, he was appointed unsalaried Professor of Policy Analysis in the Private and Public Sectors at the UvA.
From 1991-1996, Rinnooy Kan was president of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry (VNO) and, after a merger with the Netherlands Christian Workers Union (NCW), the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW). He joined the executive board of bank and insurer ING, where he remained a member until June 2006. Since August 2006, he has been a Crown-appointed member and chairman of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands.
Alexander Rinnooy Kan is married and has three children.
The central role of University Professors is to stimulate academic developments and activities that transcend traditional disciplines and make a significant contribution to the university’s image and identity. University Professors are not affiliated with a single disciplinary field. In addition to Alexander Rinnooy Kan, the UvA has five other University Professors: Johan van Benthem, Robbert Dijkgraaf, Louise Fresco, Ad Lagendijk and Henk van Os.
