Executive Board President Louise Gunning was in China from 23 to 28 September to intensify partnerships with four Chinese universities. During her visit, she made agreements concerning collaborative research and increasing the number of exchange students. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) also launched an Alumni Chapter in China.

UvA meets China

Since the end of the 1980s, the UvA has been active in encouraging collaboration with Chinese universities. This will continue to expand in the years ahead. Louise Gunning visited four of the University's five partner institutions in China: Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University. The purpose of her visit was to form new agreements aimed at intensifying research collaboration and student exchange. One example of collaborative research is the Joint Research Center in Logic, a partnership between the UvA Institute for Logic, Language and Computation and the Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University.

Gunning also signed an agreement with the China Scholarship Council concerning PhD training for Chinese students wanting to study for their doctorate at the UvA, including an option for outstanding researchers to remain at the UvA for post-doctorate studies following their PhD.

China Alumni Chapter

On 25 September 2013, the UvA China Alumni Chapter was officially founded in Beijing, with local representation in Beijing and Shanghai. The aim of the chapter is to strengthen ties between the UvA and alumni in China, as well as among Chinese alumni themselves.
