The leading scientific journal 'Science' has published an editorial by University Professor Louise Fresco. In the article, Fresco argues that Europe has a lack of confidence in genetically modified (GM) food. This reflects a European distrust in science in a broader sense and affects investments in Research & Development.
Fresco outlines how the European Union continues to oppose the use of genetic modification in agriculture, because GM foods are supposedly inherently dangerous. However, according to her respected, independent institutions in Europe have shown that genetically modified crops can contribute to sustainable food production.
Fresco concludes with a call for political courage in order to end the ideological stalemate between NGOs, producers, consumers and scientists.
