Today, the Netherlands mourns for the victims of the Malaysia Airlines disaster. This tragic event has also robbed the UvA of two of its researchers, a student and, as far as is known, one of its graduates. To commemorate the victims, flags will be flown at half mast at the UvA's campuses throughout the day.

AMC-UvA researchers Joep Lange and Jacqueline van Tongeren were travelling together to the biennial AIDS conference in Melbourne, Australia. Sascha Meijer, a talented journalism student, was travelling with her partner to Indonesia. Laurens van der Graaff, a Dutch Studies graduate, and his partner were on their way to vacation in Bali.

Taking into account their duties and responsibilities, the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam asks its staff and students to observe a minute of silence at about 16:00 once the remains of the first victims arrive in the Netherlands.

On behalf of the Executive Board,

Louise Gunning, president of the UvA-AUAS/HvA Executive Board
