The Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has appointed Professor Eric. J. Fischer as interim dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, effective 1 January 2015. Fischer will fill this position until a permanent successor is appointed for Prof. Edward de Haan, who recently decided to commit himself fully to his research, for which he received a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant in 2013.
Eric Fischer (1946) studied and obtained his PhD at the UvA’s economics faculty, and has previously held several posts at the University. In addition to holding a special chair in Business History from 1994 to 2011, Fischer was also interim dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business from February 2010 to August 2011. He has been a member of the Supervisory Boards of UvA Holding BV and HvA Holding BV since 2011.
Fischer holds a number of administrative posts, including that of vice chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Delta Lloyd Group and chair of the Supervisory Board of the Durrer Center. He was previously also president of the Board of SNS-Real Fonds, board member of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW), and a member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). In addition to having been general director of the Dutch Association of Insurers between 1993 and 2006, Fischer was also director of the European Association of Insurers from 2006 to 2007.
