Geke van Velzen, secretary general of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS/HvA), has been appointed secretary general of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Van Velzen will combine both positions, meaning that alongside one Executive Board, both institutions will also have one secretary general.
Louise Gunning, president of the Executive Board: ‘Geke already knows the UvA quite well and has in recent years taken part in administrative discussions. The Executive Board has great faith in her and is delighted that she was willing to apply for the position.’
In the coming months, a thorough assessment will be made of Van Velzen’s range of duties, the support she will need and the division of her responsibilities. The secretary general is, inter alia, responsible for the Executive Staff, supports the Executive Board and is in charge of the UvA’s integrated safety and the staff at its service units.
Former municipal clerk Henk de Jong and management consultant Annette Veldhuizen will during the coming months supervise the transition on a temporary basis.
Van Velzen has been secretary general of the AUAS/HvA since 2012. Prior to this, she was, among other things, a member of the Amsterdam municipal council and a consultant at Berenschot. Van Velzen studied history and sociology at the UvA.
