The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) will install more than 2,500 solar panels on the roofs of five of their buildings. The panels, which will cover a combined total of 4,100 m2, will annually generate about 600,000 kWh in electricity. This is equal to the power consumption of approximately 200 homes, making it one of the largest solar power projects in Amsterdam.

The UvA and AUAS will start placing the 2563 solar panels in February. The 600,000 kWh generated by the solar panels will help to reduce CO2 output. This is line with the UvA and AUAS’s objective to reduce their CO2 output. The project will also save both institutions about €66,000 per year in electricity costs.

‘By exploiting their roofs in full measure, the UvA and AUAS will be contributing to the transition to a sustainable power system’, says Harold Swartjes, director of the UvA-AUAS's Facility Services. 


The solar panels will be installed in partnership with the project developer OVG Real Estate, which managed the construction of the office building The Edge at the Zuidas. The 4,100 m2 in solar panels placed on the roofs of the UvA and AUAS will count towards the sustainability rating of The Edge. Through this, the UvA and AUAS will have made a contribution towards the construction of the world’s most sustainable building, according to BREEAM, an assessment method for determining the sustainability performance of buildings.

The panels will be installed at the Amsterdam Business School (Roeterseiland Campus), the UvA’s Faculty of Science buildings (Amsterdam Science Park) and Amsterdam University College (AUC, Amsterdam Science Park) and the AUAS’s Nicolaes Tulphuis and Dr Meurer buildings.
