Dr J.J.O.O. Wiegerinck (b. 1954) has been appointed professor of Analysis at the Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

Jan Wiegerinck will be engaging himself with research and education in the field of mathematical analysis. His research concentrates on the field of analytical functions of one and several complex variables. During the past few years he has in particular been working on a new branch of this field: pluripotential theory, which came into existence during the eighties and which is still attaining its full development. This is a non-linear generalisation of the classical Newton potential theory, the first mathematical model of gravity and electricity. Wiegerinck with his research is hoping to contribute to a better understanding of the similarities and differences between both forms of potential theory.

Wiegerinck has been attached to the UvA since 1987; first as Akademieonderzoeker (researcher appointed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, KNAW), next as university teacher, and as senior university lecturer since 1997. He was furthermore appointed director of the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics at the UvA in 2005.
