Dr W.M.A. Kalkman (b. 1961) has been appointed professor by special appointment (bijzonder hoogleraar) of Insurance Law at the Faculty of Law of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). The chair has been endowed by Stichting Verzekeringswetenschap (foundation of insurance law).

As professor by special appointment, Wouter Kalkman will be occupying himself with education and research in the field of insurance law, in particular life insurance law and pension insurance law.

Billions of euros in premiums are involved in the business of life insurances, and practically each individual has got one or more life insurances; nevertheless hardly any attention is paid to this kind of insurance in Dutch university education. Kalkman is hoping to change this and will focus on all legal and fiscal aspects concerning life insurance agreements such as the relation to matrimonial law, law of property, law of inheritance, capital transfer tax, health law (medical aspects of examinations for life insurances), the distribution of life insurances by insurance agents, but also public inspection by De Nederlandsche Bank (Bank of the Netherlands – DNB) and the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets – AFM). Life insurance as pension scheme, to which the Pensioen- en spaarfondsenwet (pension- and savings law) applies, is part of Kalkmans educational field and research field as well.

Kalkman works at ING Insurance and Investment Management Europe as Chief Legal Officer and as head of legal and fiscal matters & compliance of insurance company Nationale-Nederlanden. Furthermore he is, among other things, president of the Vereniging voor Pensioenrecht (foundation for pension law) and of several committees of the Verbond van Verzekeraars (Dutch Association of Insurers). Kalkman is editor of several journals, such as Pensioen Magazine, Pensioen Jurisprudentie, AV&S, Juridische berichten voor het notariaat and WPNR.
