Prof. M.J.Heineman has been appointed professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA).

Prof. M.J.Heineman (b. 1952) has been appointed professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). Heineman has also been appointed president of the division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Academic Medical Center (AMC).

Maas Jan Heineman studied medicine at the University of Groningen (RUG) and was trained to be a gynaecologists at the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in Nijmegen and the De Wever Medical Centre in Heerlen. He obtained his PhD degree in 1982 with his dissertation The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. From 1984 till 1987 he was part of the gynaecology partnership of the Sint Antonius Medical Centre in Nieuwegein and from 1987 till 1996 he was member of the gynaecology partnership of the De Wever Medical Centre.

Heineman was appointed professor of Reproductive Medicine at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen (RUG). Initially heading the subdepartment of Gynaecology of the University Medical Center Groningen he became head of the department of Obstetrics and Gyneacology (O&G) in 2002. The Faculty of Medical Sciences of RUG elected him ‘Best Teacher’ in 2002 and 2004.

Heineman was vice president and president respectively of the Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NVOG) from 1999 till 2003. He is editor in chief of the Nederlands leerboek Obstetrie en Gynaecologie (Dutch manual for Obstetrics and Gynaecology). As president of project group G2010 Heineman has, during the past few years, intensely been involved in the development of the new capability-directed curriculum in Medicine of the UMCG.

In his new jobs Heineman considers his most important responsbilities managing the clinic and participating in clinical evaluation research of obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive medicine.
