Dr JW Steutel has been appointed extraordinary professor of Philosophy of Education, in particular in relation to moral and citizenship education at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Dr JW Steutel (b. 1948) has been appointed extraordinary professor of Philosophy of Education, in particular in relation to moral and citizenship education, at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). The chair has been endowed by the Casimir Foundation.

Jan Willem Steutel will focus his research and teaching on sexual ethics and sex education. Subjects that he will address are the moral status of sexual contacts between adults and children (paedophilia and incest), sex education based on liberal sexual ethics, and the authority of the state to make liberal sex education compulsory in schools.

Dr Steutel has published many articles in the fields of moral education, citizenship education and sex education. He edited (with David Carr) Virtue Ethics and Moral Education (Routledge 1999).

Dr Steutel is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Education of the Vrije Universiteit (VU). He was interim head of the department of Theory and Research in Education of VU. Dr Steutel is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Moral Education.
