Dr G.R van den Brink (1970) has been appointed Professor of Experimental Gastroenterology at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
In his research, Gijs van den Brink is trying to gain a better understanding of the causes of colon cancer and inflammatory diseases of the large intestine, particularly Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In addition, Van den Brink researches the modes of action of existing treatments for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Van den Brink has set himself the task of developing new and more effective treatments that have fewer side effects.
Since 2010, Van den Brink has worked as a gastroenterologist in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department and as group leader at the Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Diseases of the Academic Medical Center (AMC). Prior to that, he was laboratory head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department of Leiden University Medical Center. He has been the recipient of a number of research subsidies, including a starting grant from the European Research Council and a Veni and Vidi grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Van den Brink has published extensively in journals such as Science, Nature Genetics and Gastroenterology. He is a member of the Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and sits on the Young European Research Area Board.
