Prof. M.J.A.P Daemen (1959) has been named professor of Pathology of Atherosclerosis at the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).

Mat Daemen is interested in the molecular mechanisms and possibilities for molecular imaging of the stability and instability of atherosclerotic plaque using cell and animal models as well as human vessel material. More recently, Daemen’s research has focused on the cardiovascular aspects of the loss of neurocognition, as he attempts to link cardiovascular research – with its models, methods and techniques – and neurobiological and neurodegenerative research.

Daemen has been a certified clinical pathologist since 1993. He was named Professor of Pathology at Maastricht University in 1997. From 2001 to 2009, he also served as chairman of the Pathology Capacity Group at Maastricht University Hospital (MUMC). In addition, Daemen served as Vice-Dean of the medical faculty, head of the clinical laboratories and as chairman of the Academic Advisory Council of the MUMC respectively. From 2006 to 2011, he was scientific director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Maastricht (CARIM) and from 2009 to April 2012 he served as chairman of the Dutch Pathology Association (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Pathologie). Since 2011, Daemen has worked in the AMC’s Pathology Department and he coordinates the vascular research of the AMC. Furthermore, he is co-chairman of the Netherlands Cardiovascular Research Committee (Commissie CardioVasculair Onderzoek Nederland, CVON) and principal investigator of the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine project PARISK (Plaque at Risk).

Daemen also holds a number of board and advisory appointments. He is a member of the Board of the Rembrandt Institute of Cardiovascular Science, a member of the scientific council of the Dutch Heart Association (Nederlandse Hartstichting), a member of the Board of the Niels Stensen Stichting (Niels Stensen Foundation) and a member of the Executive Board of the Research Council of the AMC. In addition, Daemen is a member of the editorial board of the academic journals Arterioscler Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology and Journal of Pathology. Daemen is co-founder and owner of SME ACS Biomarkers.
