Gustav Strijkers’ research focuses on the development and application of new methods for quantitative MRI imaging. His primary aim is to employ new acquisition and image reconstruction methods to accelerate MRI acquisitions and thus achieve a more targeted and broader application of the imaging technique. In this context, he and his group are examining research topics related to significant medical challenges, in particular in cardiovascular, oncological and neuromuscular medicine. Both a research MRI scanner (i.e. preclinical) and clinical MRI scanners are being used in the research. The researchers have the ambition to translate new MRI technology from basic research into human application.
Dr. Strijkers studied Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU Eindhoven), where he also obtained his PhD in 1999. After conducting postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, he was appointed assistant professor at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at TU Eindhoven, where he later became an associate professor. He has served as principal investigator and associate professor at the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC) since 2014. He is also a visiting professor at the Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute of the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Dr. Strijkers has published over 150 articles in scientific journals and around ten chapters in books. He is a Vidi laureate of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Dr. Strijkers also serves in various board and advisory positions in national and international scientific organisations.
