Dr A.J. Nederveen (1974) has been appointed professor of Applied MR Physics at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Medicine (AMC-UvA).
In his research, Aart Nederveen focuses on the development of new methods for medical imaging with the aid of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He heads a research group that designs and validates these MRI technologies, particularly in the fields of cardiovascular, muscular and oncologic imaging.
As professor at the UvA, Nederveen is committed to substantially decreasing the MRI scanning time in comparison to the current standards and is doing so for both 3T and 7T MRI scanners. In addition, he will thoroughly validate these new MRI methods in phantom experiments and by means of histopathology. He aims to demonstrate the clinical importance of these methods for cardiovascular, oncologic and muscular diseases. He will focus on implementing the new MRI methods in radiology practice at the Academic Medical Center’s (AMC) department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
Nederveen studied Applied Physics at the TU Delft. He did his doctoral research at the UMC in Utrecht and was a postdoctoral scholar at the Bijvoet Centre in Utrecht. He studied philosophy at the universities of Leiden and Utrecht. Nederveen has been a physicist associated with the AMC’s department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine since 2005 and was appointed AMC Principal Investigator in 2012.
Aart Nederveen has published more than 200 articles in international peer-reviewed professional journals, including Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Investigative Radiology, Radiology and Medical Physics. He co-leads various research projects, financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, the NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences, the National Institute of Health and the Dutch Cancer Society, amongst others. In addition to the articles published in professional journals, Nederveen also writes about religion and culture for the Wapenveld magazine, for which he is the chief editor.
