Dr Joana da Silveira Duarte (1977) has been appointed professor by special appointment of Global Citizenship and Bilingual Education at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The chair was established on behalf of ‘Stichting Nuffic’.

Duarte's research focuses on language education in multilingual environments, with a focus on promoting multilingualism in the field of Frisian, regional and migrant languages in primary and secondary education.

At the UvA, Duarte will primarily focus on research into forms of education in which personal development is seen as a consequence of global citizenship. In addition, Duarte's research will look at the development of global citizenship in the context of bilingual education. She will also examine other educational innovations, learning routes and forms of education in the field of international orientation, in particular where the European and international learning route with enhanced language education and bilingual primary education is concerned.

About Joana Duarte
Joana Duarte has been a professor in Multilingualism and Literacy at the NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences since September 2019. In addition, she has been working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen since 2016.

Duarte has frequently published on multilingualism and education. She is the author of Bilingual Language Proficiency: A Comparative Study (Münster, Waxmann Report, 2011).
