Freyberg-Inan is a generalist scholar in the fields of Political Science and International Relations. Her research focusses, inter alia, on the theory and epistemology of international relations; international political economy and globalisation; and European integration and democratisation.

As an UvA professor, Freyberg-Inan will continue to provide overarching theoretical, epistemological, and methodological expertise across sub-fields of political science, with a particular focus on international politics and international political economy. She will function as a bridge-builder within and across the research groups of political science and beyond.

Freyberg-Inan has broad experience in education, having designed and taught numerous Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD-level courses and programs. She currently serves as director of the Graduate School of Social Sciences. As an UvA professor, she will continue to make an important contribution to the quality of teaching in political science and the social sciences more broadly.

About Freyberg-Inan
Freyberg-Inan obtained her PhD in Political Science from the University of Georgia (USA) in 1998. She has been affiliated with the UvA since 2003, as assistant professor and later associate professor. From 2013 to 2015, she was professor of International Relations at the University of Darmstadt and Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advances Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Her first book - What Moves Man: The Realist Theory of International Relations and Its Judgment of Human Nature (SUNY, 2004) - is considered one of the most important in the field addressing human nature and the role it plays in theoretical traditions in international studies. This line of research was followed up with the co-edited Rethinking Realism in International Relations (Johns Hopkins, 2009), Human Beings in International Relations (Cambridge, 2015) and Evaluating Progress in International Relations (Routledge, 2016). In addition, she has published two monographs and an edited volume in the field of European politics, as well as a large range of scientific articles and chapters.

Freyberg-Inan is internationally active in the discipline of International Relations and serves on a range of advisory boards. She has held a number of high-level executive positions in the International Studies Association (ISA), the ISA’s Theory Section, and the Central and Eastern European International Studies Association. She is currently co-editor of the European Journal of International Relations, having previously co-edited the Journal of International Relations and Development and the Romanian Journal of Society and Politics.
