The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) has a vacancy for a Research technician in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. 

What are you going to do?

  • Carry out routine and custom organic synthesis (of starting materials);
  • in collaboration with other group members, develop new synthetic methods based on metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization;
  • exhibit the highest degree of reliability and accuracy to assure quality and reproducibility of results;
  • keep updated with the latest relevant literature;
  • participate in research discussions, including own research involvement;
  • contribute with the supervisor to the initial laboratory training of new team members (masters, PhD candidates, visiting scientists from academia and industry, etc.);
  • instruct (in collaboration with the supervisor) PhD and undergraduate students to the good practice in laboratory work;
  • Maintain and ensure a safe and clean work environment;
  • perform daily management and organisation of the laboratory;
  • keep updated to novel equipment and processes and advice the supervisor about their innovation and possible applications into our research programme;
  • schedule of instrument usage and responsibilities of team members;
  • in collaboration with other analysts, contact suppliers and ordering consumables and instrument parts when required.

What do we require?

You must have a hbo chemistry diploma with a special focus on organic chemistry. Previous experience in the field of organometallic chemistry is an advantage. Applications from candidates who do not meet these requirements will not be considered. We seek a technician that is highly motivated and open to work in a high multidisciplinary international environment. The candidate must be willing to share his / her expertise with the other group members as well as being open to acquire new knowledge from them. Ability to work independently (after an initial training) and laboratory trouble-shooting is highly required. You must possess good communication skills in oral and written English and Dutch.

Our offer

This temporary position is available starting from 1 November. The appointment is for an initial period of 6 months with possible extension.

The salary will be in accordance with the University regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,579 to €3,895 (salary scale 8-9) gross per month based on a full time employment and depending on expertise and previous experience. This is excl. 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end of year bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

About the Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science has a student body of around 6,500, as well as 1,600 members of staff working in education, research or support services. Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain.

The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is located at the vibrant Amsterdam Science Park. HIMS is one of eight institutes of the Faculty of Science. HIMS performs internationally recognized chemistry and molecular research, curiosity driven as well as application driven. This is done in close cooperation with the chemical, energy, flavour & food, medical and high-tech industries. Research is organised into four themes: Synthesis and Catalysis, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Photonics.

The Synthetic Organic Chemistry (SOC) group is part of the Synthesis and Catalysis theme. The SOC group is recruiting a Research Technician for supporting an exciting and multidisciplinary research.
