We are looking for an inspired, innovative assistant professor to engage in cross-cutting research within the law school’s research project on ‘Sustainable Global Economic Law (SGEL)’, and to teach innovative courses in the field of private law, at both graduate and undergraduate level.

Job description


  • Conduct research within the law school’ project on ‘Sustainable Global Economic Law (SGEL)’, which investigates law’s role in shaping the global economy as well as possibilities for transformative change towards greater degrees of social and environmental sustainablitiy;
  • teach courses in the field of private law, subject to further agreement and the competences of the selected candidate;
  • supervise master theses at graduate and possibly undergraduate level, and eventually assist in the supervision of PhD students;
  • carry out and publish independent and high-quality research that fits within the SGEL project and research at the Amsterdam Center for Transformative Private Law (ACT);
  • actively contribute to the research community of the Law School, in particular of SGEL and ACT;
  • apply for external research grants with organizations such as the NWO and ERC;
  • perform administrative and organizational tasks for the department, SGEL and/or ACT (eg participation in programme committee, examination board, etc.);
  • work as part of a team.


The ideal candidate:

  • has a PhD in private law;
  • has proven, high-quality research output in the field of private law (and/or a closely related field/discipline) in international journals and/or books;
  • has excellent didactic qualities as evidenced by educational evaluations, where available;
  • has an excellent command of English, both verbal and written; the knowledge of Dutch will be considered an advantage;
  • has excellent scientific writing, planning and communication skills;
  • has a strong motivation both to teach and to do research;
  • qualifies for additional research time under the standard of the research priority area (criteria can be requested by email).

Our offer

The candidate will be offered a tenure track position, towards the position of associate professor (universitair hoofddocent), if the candidate is available at the beginning of the appointment for teaching in the Dutch-spoken bachelor-programme and the Dutch-spoken master-programme Privaatrecht. In such a case, the position offered would be for the duration of 6 years, which will be subject to evaluation after two years and an end term evaluation. When evaluations are positive the position becomes permanent after 5 years. The appointment is at the level of assistant professor (Universitair docent 2) with a view to grow to the position of associate professor (Universitair hoofd docent 2).

Candidates who do not meet the above mentioned language requirement, but are qualified for the position, will be considered for the position of assistant professor (Universitair docent 2). In such a case, the position will be offered for 2 years, with the evaluation after a first year. Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, and the needs of the department of private law, the candidate may be offered a permanent position after the initial 2 year period.

The gross full-time monthly salary will be in accordance with the salary scales for assistant professors at Dutch universities, scale 11 ranging from €3,637 to €4,978 gross per month. Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8,3% end-of-year Bonus. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies.

The candidate will form part of the department of Private Law, the ACT, and the research project SGEL. SGEL is a law school project that connects (European) private law with public international and European law. Next to ACT it includes, in particular, researchers from the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG) and the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL).

The law school’s relevant graduate and postgraduate programmes draw a diverse, interesting and interested student population from the Netherlands and abroad. ACT has a strong track-record of excellent research and sustains a dynamic research culture through a series of events and intiatives. 

About the Amsterdam Law School

In terms of research environment, the assistant professor will be part of the lively and supportive intellectual environment of the ACT and the broader research program SGEL.
