Parliamentary elections will take place on Wednesday 29 October. This presents a new opportunity to remove the higher education cuts from the political agenda.

Dutch universities rank among the best in the world. We are proud of that – not only because of the rankings, but because we are training the next generation. Without quality education, there can be no critical thinkers or ground-breaking research.

Universities of the Netherlands (UNL) has already presented its priorities for the elections and the subsequent coalition talks:

  • Invest €2.6 billion in knowledge and innovation
To prevent us from falling further behind in Europe
  • Implement a national talent strategy
So we can attract and retain top talent
  • Prevent the erosion of teaching and research
Invest in sector plans, curiosity-driven research, and scientific infrastructure
  • Give universities space for coordination among themselves
So that joint agreements can be made on programme offerings and research
  • Reduce regulatory pressure and increase trust
Allow universities to focus again on their core tasks: teaching, research, and innovation
