This course provides training in wood anatomy on a macroscopic and a microscopic level to professionals involved in the conservation of wooden objects. Participants will acquire comprehensive knowledge and skill sets applicable to the identification of a wood sample.

The programme alternates between theoretical classes and practical sessions and includes:

• Detailed study of wood structure (on a macroscopic and a microscopic level) for both hardwoods and softwoods.
• Lectures and practical identification sessions concentrating on wood species, relevant for the field of conservation.
• Methods used for the identification of wood including keys, tables, “Inside Wood” and comparison with reference collection.

This workshop is part of the regular master's programme in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage. Participants will join the master students from the specialisation 'Wood and Furniture'.
