Dutch Studies places the emphasis on Dutch language and culture as a social, functional and dynamic whole in all four of the courses practiced. The most important aspect of historical literature is its social function; how does this develop over time? Modern literature explores the ways in which literature speaks about the world, as well as the resulting effects. Language proficiency focuses on the manner in which language is used as a means of communication, with key questions being: what can you achieve with words in this world, and what is the best way of doing so? Linguistics concerns itself with the dynamics of language and seeks to identify the effects of language acquisition processes on language change.
