Application procedure: steps

Important message for students who would like to obtain a room via the UvA Housing Office for Fall semester 2020: the housing office is currently changing their procedure of working. Consequently, the information on this website will be updated as soon as possible, but unfortunately, this information is not yet available. Therefore, please keep checking this website in the period ahead.

After you have been admitted to the UvA, you will receive an invitation to apply for housing through our online application system. Respond to this invitation as quickly as possible! The demand largely exceeds our supply. 2018
  • Step 1: Check your email for the invitation to apply for student housing

    Check your email

It is important to check your inbox and spam regularly, because the link to the housing application form will be sent to you by email. On this application form you can indicate your preference for the type of room and price category. It is not possible to indicate your preference for a location.

Please keep in mind that most of the international students will receive an invitation, but this is not always the case. You can check with the International Student Housing Office if you are eligible for UvA student housing.

    When will this email arrive?

The exact timing depends on your faculty and degree programme, but as a rule:

    • From May (for programmes starting in September)
    • From November (for programmes starting in February)

    Register with other housing websites

In most cases, UvA student housing is available for a maximum of one year.

If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for longer than one year, we strongly advise you to register on and early as possible, as these are waiting time based platforms. You can also look at the tips for finding accommodation independently.

  • Step 2: Fill in the application form

Clicking on the link in the invitation email will take you to our online application system. You will then be required to fill in a form. In addition to personal information, you will be asked about:

    • Maximum monthly rent budget: choose the category that best fits your budget. This will determine the types of rooms available to you. There are four monthly rent budget categories to choose from:
      1. Less than €410,-
      2. €410 - €500
      3. €500 - €600
      4. €600 - €850
    • Living together: let us know if you want to live with a friend or partner as there are a few rooms available for this purpose. Explore the different room types.
    • Other information that is relevant to assigning you an appropriate room.

Requesting a specific location is not possible.

If you have special housing needs because of a disability, please upload a medical statement in the application form and contact the International Student Housing Office to specify your needs.

    Application deadlines

The Early Bird deadlines for the 2019-2020 academic year are:

    • 7 June 2019 to start in September
    • 8 November 2019 to start in February

You are welcome to apply after the early bird deadline, but your chances of getting a room are smaller. The UvA housing fee is also higher after this deadline.

  • Step 4: Check your inbox (and spam folder) daily for the room offer

After submitting your application, check your email daily to find out if you’ve been selected for student housing. This can take some time.

    • If you receive an offer for a room, follow the instructions in the email to confirm your spot. (You cannot change the room or location offered.)
    • Please note, you will only get one chance to reserve a room. If you miss this offer, you will be put back at the end of the waiting list.
    • If you receive an invitation to search in a database of available rooms, follow the instructions to choose a room and confirm your spot within the given timeframe.
    • If you are not offered a room because student housing is already full, you will be put on a waiting list. There is a chance you will be offered a room at a later date, but in the meantime we recommend you look at the tips for finding accommodation independently.
    • If you find a place to live by yourself, inform the International Student Housing Office immediately so that we can remove you from the waiting list and refund the UvA housing fee.

Deadline to respond to the eventual room offer

Make sure you respond to the room offer as soon as possible!  If you fail to respond by the date given, you lose the room and will be placed at the end of the waiting list. The UvA housing fee will not be refunded in this case.

  • Step 5: Reserve your room by making your first payment

Your room reservation is confirmed once you make your first payment. Instructions for making this payment are included in the email that you receive from one of the housing providers. Be aware:

    • Room reservations are final. You cannot change rooms after you have made the reservation.
    • Cancelling a reserved room means you are no longer interested in UvA student housing. You will not be offered another room.
  • Step 6: Arriving in Amsterdam

For new international UvA students, the UvA offers a pick-up service on specific arrival days, from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport to Amsterdam, with full service and an official welcome. These pick-up days are organised in cooperation with housing partners. There are two Pick-up days in August and one in January.

The pick-up days for the 2019-2020 academic year are:

    • Friday, 16 and Monday 19 August 2019
    • Wednesday, 29 January 2020

If you do not arrive on one of these dates, you need to go to your housing corporation to finalize your registration and collect your keys.

    Longer than one year?

If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for longer than one year, we strongly advise you to register on and as early as possible. Another option is finding accommodation independently.
