Finding a job during your orientation year

It is not always easy to find a job as a highly skilled migrant. To get a good start, we advise that you contact the UvA Student Careers Centre. The UvA Student Careers Centre has specialised in advising international (non-Dutch) UvA graduates on searching for a job in the international labour market.

The advisors can help international students with information, workshops and individual vocational counseling to find out what you want, get insight into your capabilities and competencies, make choices and improve your application skills in order to achieve your goals.

To find out more about the UvA Student Careers Centre, visit career.uva.nl, where you can also make an appointment.

Internships

An internship is any work placement or practical training arrangement designed to give you practical experience in the discipline or field that you are studying. During your orientation year, this can also be a good option to help you with the job-seeking process.

In the Netherlands, it’s common that people get hired after a successful internship.

Before you apply

Before you apply for an internship, check whether you need to be a student to fulfil the position. When you find an internship, you will need a formal internship agreement between the intern, the internship provider and the UvA. The internship provider must be able to present this agreement to the Labour Inspectorate if asked to do so. Use of this internship agreement is therefore not optional: it is compulsory.
