Check the Course Catalogue for information about the course you wish to follow. As long as you meet the entry requirements, many courses can be taken as an elective course. If a course cannot be taken as an elective course, this is usually mentioned in the course description (‘Course only open to ...’).

• Log in to Studielink and select the degree programme where you want to follow an elective course. Select the degree programme with ‘elective’ added to the end, and the desired level: Bachelor's or Master's. The name of the degree programme the elective course belongs to can be found in the Course Catalogue.
• Even if you have already registered as an elective student at the UvA before, it is still necessary to re-register in Studielink at the start of each new academic year.
• Within two working days of having made your registration request via Studielink, you will receive an email with your UvA student ID number and an activation email for your account.

If you want follow elective courses in two or more UvA degree programmes, you only have to register as an elective student in one degree programme.

If you meet the conditions, indicate in Studielink that you want to pay with Proof of Paid Tuition Fees.

Follow the steps below:
1. Go to the tab 'Payment' and click 'Enter payment details'. 
2. Fill in the country of residence of your bank. 
3. Select the payment option 'Proof of paid tuition fees'. 
4. Select the educational institution where you want to apply for the Proof of payment. This is the institution where you have already paid tuition fees. 
5. Agree that Studielink will request the Proof of payment from the selected educational institution and forward it to the educational institution 

Each faculty has its own additional steps which are required in order to take an elective course. The UvA has strict course registration periods, which you can find in this overview.

Faculty of Science (FNWI)

If you want to take an elective course at the Faculty of Science as a non-UvA student, get in touch with the Service Desk at the Science Park: servicedesk-esc-science@uva.nl.

Amsterdam Law School (FdR)

In order to do an elective course you need to fulfill the entry requirements of the specific programme, therefore please check the entry requirements first. In case you fulfill the entry requirements, the Admissions Office will admit you based on your educational background as registered in DUO. 

Please follow the steps of the course registration on the student website.

Please note: if you are studying at another university, you will first have to register for the elective course in Studielink. If you are studying at the UvA and you are admissible you can directly register for the course(s) via the regular course registration procedure.

If you want to enrol in an elective course at the Faculty of Economics and Business, follow the procedure for course registration.

Faculty of Humanities (FGw)

If you want to enrol in an elective course at the Faculty of of Humanities, follow the procedure for course registration on the Faculty's student website.

Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG)

Psychology: go to following elective courses at the Psychology department.

Bachelor's programme in Communication Science: The Course Catalogue lists which courses at the College of Communication can be taken as an elective course. Use the terms ‘open UvA college’ and ‘College Communicatiewetenschap’ to filter results. Furthermore you should submit a request to the Examinations Board to ask permission.

Master's programme in Communication Science: You can only follow an elective course at the Graduate School of Communication if you meet the entry requirements and if there are still places available in the course.
