I already have a residence permit for study at another Dutch institution

If you already have a residence permit for the purpose of study from another Dutch educational institution and you wish to study at the University of Amsterdam, we will need to send a new application to the Dutch Immigration Service (IND) to advise them of your transfer and that of your residence permit to our university. A so-called ‘Change of educational institution’ application.

Two situations are possible:

  • Your residence permit is valid for at least three more months

We will submit a Change of educational institution application on your behalf.

    Application costs

The Change of educational institution application is free of charge.

    Documents

You will need to upload the following documents before we can submit the Change of educational institution application on your behalf:

    1. A valid passport

    2. A copy of your current residence permit

    3. Proof of financial means:

      1. Funds to finance your stay in the Netherlands - this amount does not include your tuition fee

      2. Funds to finance your tuition fee - not applicable to exchange students

    4. Antecedents certificate - the form needs to be signed by hand (not digitally).

Validity of your current residence permit

You can continue to use the same residence permit card during and after the Change of educational institution application. You will not receive a new residence permit card once the application has been completed. Your current residence permit will remain valid until the expiration date on your card.

    Extension of the validity

If your residence permit is valid for at least three more months the Change of educational institution application does not include an extension of the validity of your residence permit. You can apply for an extension up to 3 months before the expiration date on your residence permit card. You can find more information about the extension application on the dedicated page.

  • Your residence permit will expire within three months

We will submit both a Change of educational institution application and an application for the extension of your residence permit on your behalf.

    Application costs

The cost for a Change of educational institution application + extension is €195. This fee is not refundable.

    Documents

You will need to upload the following documents before we can submit the Change of educational institution application on your behalf:

    1. A valid passport

    2. A copy of your current residence permit

    3. Proof of financial means:

      1. Funds to finance your stay in the Netherlands - this amount does not include you tuition fee

      2. Funds to finance your tuition fee - not applicable to exchange students

    4. Antecedents certificate - the form needs to be signed by hand (not digitally).

    Validity of your residence permit

You will receive a new residence permit card after the Change of educational institution application has been completed.

    • Your residence permit will be issued for the duration of the nominal study programme plus three months.

    • The nominal duration of a study programme is three years for a Bachelor’s programme and one or two years for a Master’s programme.

Please note that we will only apply for an extension if your current residence permit expires within three months. If your current residence permit is valid for more than three months we will cancel the application for extension. The fee won’t be refundable in this case.

Please read the following information carefully to find out what to do.

Conditions and deadlines

  • Once you have been conditionally admitted to your study programme at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), you will need to start your application for a residence permit (in this case called an application for the change of educational institution). The UvA will process the application on your behalf.

  • It is therefore not necessary to contact the Dutch Immigration Service (IND) yourself unless you intend to request a residence permit for purposes other than study (e.g. family reunification).

  • Please note that although the UvA assists you with residency formalities by processing your application, your legal residency remains your own responsibility.

Deadline

  • Your change of educational institution application needs to be approved before the start of your programme. In order to start your programme in September 2020 your need to submit your application before 1 August.  Please note that the UvA cannot guarantee that a change of educational institution request will be granted by a certain date, or at all.

50% Minimum Threshold

  • By law you need to obtain at least 50% of the credits of your study programme each year. If you do not attain the 50% threshold, the UvA will verify whether there is an excusable reason for you to be exempted from the threshold.

  • If you are not exempted, the UvA has to inform the IND about it and your student residence permit will be withdrawn.
