The PhD study programme is compulsory for all PhD candidates who pursue a doctorate at the Amsterdam Law School. This is to ensure that all our PhD candidates are equipped with sufficient knowledge and tools.

Regular study programme timetable

The standard study programme begins in September each year and runs until the start of the summer. It starts with an intensive module consisting of weekly three-hour seminars, followed by a number of smaller modules. The annual PhD workshop, during which first-year PhD candidates present their research and receive feedback from other Amsterdam Law School researchers, takes place in June.

PhD Education for external candidates

For external PhD candidates who do not participate in the regular PhD courses, the PhD education takes a different form. The faculty  facilitates (online) training and materials on research methods, academic skills and on the principles of scientific integrity as observed at the UvA. Opportunities are also created for external PhD candidates to present their research and receive feedback from other legal researchers. External PhD candidates are considered as fully fledged members of the faculty research community.

Please note: we strongly recommend that PhD candidates take the study programme in the first, and in any case no later than the second year of the doctoral programme, so that they may reap the full rewards of the acquired knowledge throughout the remainder of the programme.
