    Current research

Jan is a PhD candidate within the joint UvA, MenA (City of Amsterdam Office for Monuments and Archaeology) and the JHM (Jewish History Museum) project called  Diaspora and Identity: an integrated archaeological and historical investigation into material life, ethnicity, and diet in the district of Vlooienburg, Amsterdam (AD 1600-1800). This NWO funded project aims to improve our understanding of the seventeenth to eighteenth century inhabitants of the predominantly Jewish district of Vlooienburg, the present-day Waterlooplein.

His research includes the analysis of the animal remains recovered from Vlooienburg’s numerous cesspits, in order to reconstruct the district’s inhabitants’ diet, dietary customs and rites, and ethnicity, as well as to provide better insights into Amsterdam’s seventeenth and eighteenth century supply of livestock.

    Background

Jan obtained a BA in Palaeoecology and a MSc in Bioarchaeology at Leiden University’s Faculty of Archaeology. His MSc thesis entitled ‘About the possibility to trace Jewish urban households by means of an ichthyo-archaeological investigation. A study on archaeological fish remains from post-medieval Amsterdam and medieval Cologne’, involved the study of fish remains from several Amsterdam contexts, including Vlooienburg, and those found at the Cologne Rathausplatz.
