Marguerite van den Berg is associate professor of Sociology. She is interested in the urban, gender, public policy and work.
In October 2021, she published Werk is geen oplossing, 'Work is not a solution' with Amsterdam University Press. The book is a political intervention, but also a personal book about the place of paid work in our lives. It urges us to consider work a problem and it considers strategies for the refusal of work. The book also discusses alternative forms of subsistence security, such as commoning.
In Spring 2017, Van den Berg published Gender in the Post-Fordist Urban – The Gender Revolution in Planning and Public Policy (Palgrave Macmillan 2017). She has been a visiting scholar at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City, at Humboldt University in Berlin and an embedded researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut. In the Spring of 2021, she was a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. She teaches in the Sociology program of the University of Amsterdam.
She is a member of the board of the Amsterdam Research Center for Gender and Sexuality and a member of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, Research and the Center for Urban Studies.
