  • Research Interests

My research focuses on inequality in education, the labor market, and science. My work mostly focuses on understanding how inequalities between groups arise, and how we can understand why trajectories diverge within these three domains. In my current research projects I am for example interested in understanding how the linkage between school and work affects labor market outcomes in the short- and longterm, or how scientists’ careers diverge. In my work on labor market inequality I study how occupations and organizatons affect wage inequality. I am currently collecting data on how homeschooling during the Corona outbreak affects social inequality in educational outcomes.

I am In 2015 I received a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research to study how occupations structure wage inequality in Europe. I  am currently also involved in a NORFACE grant and in a NCO grant that facilitates data collection in the transition from primary to secondary school in the Netherlands.

  • Teaching and Supervision

At the University of Amsterdam I have developed and taught several courses in the BA (e.g., Introduction to statistics, Education and Work), in the MA (Advanced Quantitative Data Analysis, Master thesis supervision), and in the Research Master Social Sciences (Replication in Quantitative Social Sciences, Fixed and Random Effects, Thesis supervision). I have taught several courses on social stratification, inequality, research methodology, and quantitative methods. About teaching replication methods I have written an academic article in Teaching Sociology, together with Dragana Stojmenovske, who was a student in the first run of the course, and Thomas Leopold, with whom I developed the course.

I also supervise PhD theses as Promotor and Co-Promotor. For more information, please see my CV.
