Jingjie Dai is a PhD candidate in sociology at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR).

Engaging with the scholarships of queer migration and queer African studies, his doctoral research looks into how queer Sub-Saharan African migrants in Morocco live and interpret their migratory experiences. In particular, he focuses on whether and (if so,) how different social axes, such as sexuality, gender, race, class, nationality, language, religion and legal status, are resources moblized in the processes of the making of queer space, boundary work and position evaluation in a constraining context like the one in Morocco. He spent a total of two years in Morocco with one year and a half in Rabat for fieldwork and six months in Tetouan in preparation of the PhD.

In addition, he represents Political Sociology at the AISSR PhD Council and in the academic year 2023-2024, he teaches the course "From Home to Homeland. Understanding the Longing for Belonging" with Prof. Jan Willem Duyvendak.

Jingjie holds a master’s degree in international public management from Sciences Po Paris and a BA in international relations and French from Pomona College.

Jingjie Dai est doctorant en sociologie à l’Institut d’Amsterdam pour la recherche en sciences sociales (AISSR).

En dialoguant avec les études des migrations queer et les études africaines queer, sa recherche doctorale se penche sur comment les migrant.e.s queers subsaharien.ne.s au Maroc vivent et interprètent leurs expériences migratoires. En particulier, elle se focalise sur si et (si tel est le cas,) comment les différents axes sociaux, tels que sexualité, genre, race, classe, nationalité, langue, religion et statut juridique, sont des ressources mobilisées pour créer des espaces queer, pour tracer des frontières symboliques et sociales et pour évaluer leurs positions dans un contexte contraignant tel que celui du Maroc. Il a passé au total deux ans au Maroc avec un an et demi à Rabat dans le cadre d’un travail de terrain ethnographique et six mois à Tétouan en préparation du doctorat.

De plus, il représente le groupe Sociologie politique au conseil consultatif de l’AISSR pour les doctorant.e.s et pour l’année scolaire 2023/24, il enseigne le cours « From Home to Homeland. Understanding the Longing for Belonging » avec Prof. Jan Willem Duyvendak.

Jingjie est titulaire d’un master en gestion publique internationale de Sciences Po Paris et d’un bachelor en relations internationales et en français du Pomona College.
