    Academic Profile and Research Interests

My background is in Comparative Literature (French, German, English) and I defended my PhD thesis (The Big Deal: Card Games in 20th-Century Fiction) at the Université de Montréal, Département de littérature comparée, in 1997. In 1998, I came to the UvA (ASCA), on a Québec government FCAR Postdoctoral Fellowship, to continue research on topics explored in my PhD thesis in literature, (i.e. mimesis, play, games, chance, risk, gambling, speculation, addiction) in relation to 17th-century Dutch and Flemish genre paintings of card players; how they circulated through the art market; and what they continue to signify to us today.

I began teaching at the UvA in the Film and Media Studies departments in 2001, following a two-year sessional appointment in Comparative Literature at the Universiteit Leiden (1999-2001). In 2003, I was hired in the UvA’s NGO programme, and later transferred to the English Department where I became UHD in 2007. From 2008–2010, I was appointed to co-create Amsterdam University College where I designed both the Humanities tracks (Literature, Film, History, Art History), and the Information, Communication, Cognition tracks, for which I also served as Head of Studies.

I am deeply committed to interdisciplinary research and continue to work in a number of disciplines including finance (See my 2019 review of The Social Life of Financial Derivatives: Markets, Risk, and Time, by Ed LiPuma, in the Journal of Cultural Economy, https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17530350.2019.1570539).  The relationship between literature and finance is also at the heart of my interest in Pieter Langendijk’s plays on the financial bubbles of 1720 that burst in England (The South Sea Bubble), France (The Mississippi Scheme), and The Dutch Republic, which I translated with Frans de Bruyn and Merlijn Erken. The translation was published in September 2020 with Liverpool University Press in a volume that also contains my translation (with de Bruyn and Erken) of the 1892 editor’s introduction to Langendijk and the critical apparatus of that edition, as well as six essays by contemporary theatre and economic historians (Leemans; Paul, Looijsteijn, Rosenhaft), as well as literary scholars (Goggin, de Bruyn). Frans de Bruyn and I have now begun working on a new collection of essays by various scholars on the Bubble Plays written and performed in the Dutch Republic in 1720, as well as in France and Britain.

I continue to write about playing and tarot cards and have recently published “Live and Let Die: The Tarot as Other in the 007 Universe” in Bond Uncovered (Palgrave, 2018). On playing cards and games: I have an essay in press on  “Banking Games, Speculation, and the Normalization of Finance,” in Casino and Classic Card Games: Communities, Cultures, and Play (Bloomsbury), and I am an Associate Editor for Critical Gambling Studies (https://www.criticalgamblingstudies.com/index.php/cgs/about/editorialTeam). I

While I have published widely on gambling, speculation, chance, risk, addiction and finance in literature and painting, my background in film has also led me to publish several articles in "Bond Studies" (i.e. on the novel and film adaptation of Casino Royale, and Diamonds are Forever). My most recent 007 book chapter, entitled “Skyfall and Global Casino Culture,” was published in October, 2020 in The Cultural Live of James Bond: Spectres of 007 (AUP, 2020).

My interest in games also led me to become involved in (video) game studies and, in 2004, UvA, Media Studies asked me to develop a course on video games. The result was “Perspectives on Games” which I taught for the next two years. Since that time I have published numerous articles on games (most recent: “Transmedia Storyworlds, Literary Theory, Games.” Journal of Media and Culture. 2018:  http://journal.media-culture.org.au/index.php/mcjournal/article/view/1373) and continue to be an active member of DiGRA and Literary Theory and Games.

As a feminist scholar I have a deep interest in making “herstory” visible and audible, which is one of the central tasks of “Women, Money and Markets: 1600-1900” http://www.womenmoneymarkets.co.uk; an interdisciplinary research network I co-founded with Emma Newport (University of Sussex), that brings together people working in economic history, literary studies, theatre studies, economics and finance. Our third conference in the series was held at the University of Sussex, June 13-14, 2019, and we will had planned to meet for our fourth international conference at Universität Zürich, in June 2020, postponed to 2021.

My current interests include dolls and toy research and I delivered “Doll-ers and Cents: The Financialization of Childhood and the Gamification of Finance,” the opening keynote at the 2017 meeting of Critical Finance Studies, held in honour of Randy Martin at the University of Leicester. I also spoke on that topic at the International Toy Research Association's conference in Paris in June, 2018 and I am an active memeber of the association. I have published a number articles on LEGO, including “Toyetics and Novelizations: Bringing The LEGO Movie to the Page,” in More Than Just Bricks: Critical Perspectives on LEGO in Popular Culture (Palgrave, 2019).

I am also very interested in material culture and have joined SOAS of the University of London in their work on the sponge trade. My article entitled “Sexing the sponge: Luxury, trade and the female body” is forthcoming in The Global Life of Sponges: Social, cultural, historical, and political (http://www.geocities.ws/soasspongesconference2018/bookcontents.htm). In my future research I hope to bring my interest in material culture to the study of textiles, and I am actively compling an archive on knitting.

I am co-founder of Critical Finance Studies, and Games and Literary Theory. I am the trustee in charge of diversity for the Association of Adaptation Studies. I am a member The Economic History Society and I review for a wide variety of academic journals and presses. I am also a memeber of the advisory board for The History of Financial Advice (https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=AH%2FN003241%2F1), an AHRC funded research project, and for AlterEcos: Exploring Alternatives to Currently Dominant Forms of Economic Organizing with the Copenhagen Business School.
